Viticulture

Our admiration for the environment means that we understand viticulture in the most natural and respectful way possible. We control the quality of our vineyards by using spontaneous vegetable covers, minimal works, reasonable agriculture, compost and sheep grazing to control weeds, and by naturally abandoning plots.

All these practices form part of how we understand viticulture, thereby encouraging the preservation of our soils and the equilibrium of their ecosystem. It is a de-stressed land with a microclimate inherent to the valley, which helps to achieve a unique quality in the wine, that is very rich in water and enjoys a much cooler temperature than in the plain or pla of Majorca, which in summer can produce differences of up to 10ºC.

Son Vich de Superna’s location in the heart of Majorca’s Serra de Tramuntana entails a mountain context, which indissolubly links our wines to a difficult territory, whose climate and land infuse the Serra’s exclusive aromas and characteristics. The vineyards’ altitude, from 1,476 ft to 1,804 ft, and the complicated orography mean that our vineyards are situated on terraces with stone walls or marges. This particular feature makes mechanisation difficult and involves work on some plots having to be carried out manually, returning to the working method of our ancestors.

Majorca’s Serra de Tramuntana gives our wines differential organoleptic characteristics. This is due to the thermal differences between day and night, and the Serra’s cooler temperature. Our vines’ cycle is naturally lengthened, even in the short-cycle varieties, producing fresher, less alcoholic wines with a balanced natural acidity, which are elegant and have personality.

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Vi de la Terra Mallorca

We are covered by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Vi de la Terra Mallorca, a mark of quality which commits to recovering and protecting the island’s indigenous grape varieties that make our wines unique.

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord

We also form part of the PGI Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord. The different organoleptic and chemical characteristics of the Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord wine enable the recognition of its quality, that of great mountain wines.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Serra de Tramuntana also constitutes one of only four wine production areas in the world classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Son Vich de Superna’s location in the heart of this privileged mountain range entails a mountain context, which indissolubly links our wines to a difficult territory, whose climate and land infuse Son Vich’s exclusive aromas and characteristics.

Centre for the Research, Study, Protection, Coordination and Advancement of Mountain Viticulture (CERVIM)

We also form part of the Centre for the Research, Study, Protection, Coordination and Advancement of Mountain Viticulture (CERVIM), an international body located in Aosta Valley, Italy, which allows us to be in contact with the other vineyard owners who, like us, form part of this heroic viticulture due to the complicated relief where their vines are planted, very pronounced inclines, marges, etc.
